The Joy of Small Shows

That’s the title of an article in the latest issue (September) of British Railway Modelling Magazine. The main article, by Phil Parker argues that small shows are worth a visit.

I couldn’t agree more; to me they are at the heart of the hobby. As against large shows, there is time to chat to operators, ask questions and have a nice cup of tea or coffee with some home made cake, whilst you watch the trains go by! Possibly some bargains on the club second-hand stall as well.

I would recommend the Liphook & District Club’s Open Day event- Model Trains in the Valley on Sunday 29th October 2017 at the Milland Valley Memorial Hall GU30 7NA- close to The Rising Sun PH and Milland Stores at Milland Cross Roads, (3 miles from Liphook Hampshire; 7 miles from Petersfield Hampshire and from Midhurst West Sussex,  in the South Downs National Park.

Now in its 8th year this will be the first I will not be involved in, but I may be exhibiting!

The Open Day is aimed at enjoyment of our hobby- so do come along and support their efforts

Building a Model Railway Group is GO!

It was a successful launch for Building a Model Railway Group 2017 at Liphook U3A’s Open Day yesterday (13th March).

I went prepared with lots of model railway reading matter to while away the hours! Actually it was quite hectic at some periods with people waiting.

Seven were signed up pus one who was already signed up so we have 8 in total. At that rate the cost will be £21 each for the 12 monthly sessions.

I have written to the 3 “associated” local U3A’s as a last check to see if we can get another 3 or so to reduce the subs a little more.

The group was a good spread with a range of types- most new to retirement, but no obvious anoraks!

E-mails out to confirm arrangements later today..

No “Model Trains in Petersfield” in 2016

There will be no Model Trains in Petersfield Open Day event in 2016.

Instead the club will display Friedrichstrasse  at the Milland Rural Fair on Sunday 5th June.

The club will review the future of a Petersfield event at the next AGM. One consideration will be to have the event every 2 years, alternating with attending Milland Rural Fair

We will also be having a small layout + club display at the Midhurst Rother College Community Day on  Saturday 23 April . This will be the first time we have attended what seems to be an annual event & will give the club opportunity to preview our activities to general public locally.

Good day ~playing trains at Model Trains in Petersfield event

IMG_5283We had an early start this morning (7am) to load Martin H & my car from the club store at MVMH. David P & Ben R assisted and then went on to load Buroklammer into  Ben & Davids cars

Matt was there at the hall with doors already unlocked at 7.30ish Most layouts were up and operational by 9.

There was a flow of visitors at 10am when we opened, which continued until midday, but with the lovely weather in the afternoon numbers never recovered.

Everybody, members and visitors alike seemed to enjoy themselves, which is the way to judge such an event. All layouts performed well. Attendance was down on last year, but it looks like financially we covered our costs (S/H sales were fairly good)- all subject to Graham checking things out!

Philipa did an excellent job on the refreshments and David our “new” Chairman presented her with some flowers as a small token of our appreciation .

We  closed at 4pm and were packed & loaded by just gone 5pm. We were able to unload at MVMH prompt at 6pm with the last Ballet Class leaving.

All in all a good day.

Good Luck to Nick with him wearing the organiser hat for Model Trains in the Valley on 25th October in MVMH
