As a result of a newspaper appeal some months ago, Mrs Barbara Ellis, the widow of a former club member, saved approx 25 club newsletters from 1976 to 1982 from her dustbin after having a” de-cluttering day”. The “cache” includes some club accounts, some quizzes and details of some modelling competitions held, plus a guide for an exhibition held by the club at Liphook Infant’s School on 12th November 1988. Also involved are 4 photographs of Mrs Ellis presenting club modelling trophies in March 1980, which will be scanned and returned to her.
The Newsletters were produced jointly with the Astolat Model Railway Circle (of Guildford) which is still in existence and was called “Good Sidings”. Reference to the Astolat Club in the heading of the Newsletter seems to cease in late 1980, although mention is still made of them in the body of the newsletter. The Editor seems to have been Ian Baker, well known in Liphook as a local historian, for all the editions we have. Good Sidings ran to 3 or more pages and especially in the earlier editions included book reviews, articles about prototypes etc- but no photographs. All typed and possibly issued as Roneo or Gestener copies to members.
Many thanks to Mrs Ellis for saving them and bringing them along to the recent Liphook U3A Open Day where we were displaying a layout in connection with this years “Building a Model Railway Course” a joint effort with Liphook U3A
